Grief in career transitions

Like many others, I find Erin Bertram’s essay “The sublimated Grief of the Left Behind” poignant. Although I am not sure that it was entirely her intention, her essay invites us to see what we too rarely acknowledge, let alone allow ourselves to feel: the grieving that comes when we let go of a career that has shaped who we are, and for better or worse, given us a place and legitimacy in social settings that we can no longer claim once we leave.

Recognizing grief as a part of career change provides a blueprint for understanding and moving past the sadness, resentment and inertia that often creep in, even when we clearly chose to get on a new career path.
